The Unity - August 15, 2010

Welcome to The Unity.

Several years ago when I was an undergraduate at Cleveland State University, I met a now long lost friend by the name of Anthony Macko. He was a great man, but an even better friend during those rough undergraduate days. Anyhow, he inspired me to begin an email distribution publication that I deemed "The Unity." It was a spontaneous, dedicated attempt to bring the world, and people, around me together through these symbols we call words. Looking back, it was a rather modest way for me to bring my humanity full-circle with myself and nature. During this brief time in my life, my thoughts were as fluid as water. Constant yet ever-changing; my heart was an open vessel waiting to be filled then emptied, filled then emptied, filled then emptied.

As time passes, we get caught up in the gale force winds of life. We are picked up and thrown to places that our mind has never conceived. Our priorities adjust. We adapt to our own circumstances, and things change. Our perspective morphs and our vision tunnels down a different subway of light. We accomplish great feats while failing miserably with others; we make new acquaintances and we lose contact with friends we have had for years. But as Macko once stated, "nothing ever ends; there are only new beginnings." Through no fault of our own, these new beginnings are formed from the depths of chance and our old beginnings become distant phenomena.

Now, several years taken away from Cleveland State University, I hear the calling once again. My spirit yearns to realize its full potential. I have the need to unify with the world and the people that inhabit it by way of written word. I have the need to bridge the gaps in my humanity and cross the valleys in my being. I will not play the fool to my mind, though. This journey will not have a destination, it will only serve a purpose. I do not have, nor will I ever have, the ability to bridge my gaps and cross my valleys utterly and completely. These gaps and valleys are infinite in nature; they are a part of what makes me and they will exist as long as I exist.

As humans, we are inherently ignorant. Our knowledge is no where near all-encompassing. To prove this, simply walk into any ordinary library. The wealth of knowledge that lays undiscovered by our mind there is enough to humble even the most resourceful human. In fact, the more knowledge we take in, the more we realize how much knowledge we do not have. As Socrates once proclaimed, "the only true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing." The thirst for understanding of ourselves, others, and the world around us should pervade all that we do. The guiding light for this rebirth of The Unity will be my passion for understanding which will then serve as the catalyst for action.

I ask you to join me on this pilgrimage of a higher purpose. We can feed off of each other; we can learn and grow together. Our Unity is The Unity.
